About The Band:
Born David John Matthews in a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa on January 9, 1967, Matthews moved with his family in 1986 to Charlottesville, Virginia. It was here where he began working as a bartender at Miller's. Miller's was popular with the local musicians, and eventually Dave met saxophonist Leroi Moore. Together they assembled a group in 1990. The group called Dave Matthews Band (they never really got around to giving themselves a "real" name) consists of: Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Boyd Tinsley, Stefan Lessard, and LeRoi Moore.
The Dave Matthews Band had released an independent live album in 1993, called Remember Two Things, they signed a record deal with RCA/BMG. Soon after the release of this album, the band was put on the road where they continued to gain fans. Their popularity eventually grew as they released more albums, such as Crash and Before These Crowed Streets during the end of 1996 and early 1997. In the new Millennium, DMB spent a lot of their time raising money for charities such as partnerships with Native Energy, the Tsunami Relief, the Bama Works Village Recovery Fund and CARE. In August 2008, DMB lost an integral part of their family and founding member of the band, LeRoi Moore, who passed away from an earlier ATV accident.
The New studio album “Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King” was released in June of 2009 and was nominated for two Grammy Awards, Best Rock Album and Album of the Year. According to Matthews, “Groo Grux” refers to a nickname for LeRoi Moore, Tim Reynolds, Carter Beauford, Tim Wicks and Dave Matthews himself and was described as a made up word to describe the “vibe, energy and wild sounding rhythms”. Bassist Stephan Lessard and violinist Boyd Tinsley are also considered graduates of the Groo Grux Academy.
